For Eduard Burle, and for Silke Heiss

TWO LITTLE DICKIE BIRDS

A Wreath of Sixty-five roses*

Pale and thin,
White, delicate-veined
With bunched stalks –
They droop in the sun.
The diseased fruit of a mismarriage.
Or was it the season?
The climate? The ground
"Sixty-five roses, how quaint",
she murmurs,
"for an illness".

Makes no sense
When the image in the mirror is three-dimensional

Which is it – the id, or the superego
That comes first?
